Puppy Checklist
A puppy is easier to enjoy when the basics are ready before the first night. This checklist focuses on practical setup, gentle training, safe routines, and early veterinary planning.
Before the Puppy Comes Home
- Choose a veterinarian and schedule the first visit.
- Confirm the puppy's food, feeding schedule, vaccine record, and parasite history.
- Set up a crate, pen, or puppy-safe room for rest and supervision breaks.
- Remove electrical cords, toxic plants, small swallowable objects, and unsafe cleaners.
- Buy bowls, leash, collar or harness, ID tag, bedding, chew toys, and cleaning supplies.
First Week Routine
- Keep introductions calm and avoid overwhelming visitors.
- Take the puppy out after waking, eating, playing, and before sleep.
- Reward calm behavior, name response, gentle handling, and coming when called.
- Use short training sessions instead of long, frustrating lessons.
- Track appetite, stool, energy, coughing, vomiting, itching, or unusual behavior for the vet.
